Laparoscopy is a procedure in which tiny surgical instruments and camera (the laparoscope) are inserted through a small incision in the abdomen. The incision is much smaller than a normal surgical incision, which is why this procedure falls under the category of minimally invasive procedures. The camera transmits its pictures to a video monitor, so we can see a magnified image of a pet’s internal structures and perform surgical procedures without the need for a large incision. Over the past 15 years, laparoscopy has become the standard of care in human medicine and has significantly reduced recovery time and complication rates in people.

We are proud to be one of the very few general practices in this area that can provide our patients a minimally invasive approach to surgery for many procedures. Laparoscopic surgery means a much smaller incision size and therefore lower risk of complication, decreased post-operative pain, and a much shorter recovery time. For example, a study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association concluded that laparoscopic spays caused less surgical stress and up to 65% less post-operative pain than a traditional open surgical spay.*

The following are procedures that can be performed with laparoscopy:

  • Ovariectomy (spay)
  • Gastropexy
  • Liver biopsy
  • Intestinal biopsies

Our veterinarians have received specialized training, and our advanced equipment allows us to perform less invasive procedures for a safer, more comfortable experience for your pet.
